What do these look like and how do we describe them. Let me give this some thought! The following are some points that I think apply to these titles. You may/maynot agree and that is ok. I would love to hear your thoughts. Feel free to comment.
Lately I have been doing some research and lots of reading on this subject. I have been a manager of a non-profit organization, I have also sat in the role on a board as a member, vice chair and chair person. In each of these roles I have learned many things.
Leadership can take many forms, and the qualities that define good and bad leaders can often overlap in different contexts, such as parenting, business, or community roles. Here’s a breakdown of these concepts:
Good Leaders
- Visionary: They have a vision, sometimes it is a clear vision other times it is a great idea to create something good and they have the ability to inspire others to work towards it.
- Empathetic: Good leaders listen to and understand the needs and feelings of their team or family. They are able to work with these needs and thoughts to accomplish the goals laid out.
- Integrity: They demonstrate honesty and strong principles, earning trust and respect.
- Adaptable: They are flexible and able to adjust their approach based on changing circumstances.
- Supportive: Good leaders empower others, providing guidance and encouragement to help them succeed.
Parents as Leaders
This is the reality of what parenting is in my opinion. Having raised 7 children and for many of those years being a single parent these things definitely ring true.
- Role Models: Parents set an example for their children through their actions and values.
- Nurturers: They provide emotional support and foster a safe environment for growth.
- Communicators: Effective parents communicate openly, encouraging dialogue and understanding.
- Decision-Makers: They make choices that consider the well-being and development of their children.
- Disciplinarians: They establish boundaries and rules that teach responsibility and respect.
Bad Leaders
Yes there are these out there. Leadership is not about power it is about working with others and helping to develop the gifts and talents in others.
- Authoritarian: They may use fear or intimidation to control others rather than inspire them.
- Inflexible: Bad leaders resist change and fail to adapt to new situations or feedback.
- Self-Centered: They prioritize their own interests over the needs of their team or family.
- Lack of Accountability: They often avoid taking responsibility for their actions and decisions.
- Poor Communicators: They may fail to share important information or listen to others, leading to misunderstandings.
Conclusion
Leadership, whether in parenting or other roles, significantly impacts those being led. Good leaders foster positive environments, while bad leaders can create challenges and dissatisfaction. Striving for effective leadership qualities can benefit individuals and communities alike.
This is a great conversation to be sure. I am so grateful for all of the great leaders, the good leaders and even the bad ones that I have had exposure to. Each in their own way taught me something about what I want to see in a leadership position.
